Texas is reportedly moving closer to approving legislation that could
help it become a leader in the solar energy industry.
A Wall Street Journal report says that a solar power rebate plan was just approved by Texas state senators and must still be approved in the
house. The $500 million plan would provide rebates funded by electricity bills to encourage more residents to invest in solar
The plan reportedly has the potential to generate between 250 and 500 megawatts of solar energy
in Texas, where lawmakers are also said to be weighing a proposal to require a 60 percent increase in renewable energy production
from non-wind sources. The Journal notes that about 30 percent of the plan would be used to benefit small-scale solar installations.
Developing a stronger solar energy in Texas would complement the state's existing status as the number one producer
of wind energy in the country.
